Mammoth Mountains
By Dylan Lewis
Project Description
The point of this project was to make prints slightly based on old mexican prints, and put our own spin on it. My prints were based on Mammoth Mountains where I often go with friends to bike, take photos, etc.
Process
While printmaking, we used clay softblocks and carved out our drawings, and then put block printing inc on it, so that when we "stamp it" on to the paper, we can recreate our pieces over and over again. It was difficult at first to be exact with my carves but as I kept trying and found different carving tools it got easier. I had a few different proofs on proof paper before I had my final products on final paper. I also used a bench hook to help keep my cuts nice and straight.
Subject Matter
This print represents my appreciation and passion for mountain landscapes and landscape photography. I based my drawing/prints on mountain ranges that I’ve seen in mammoth and have taken photos of. Sadly I can’t find the original photo, but the overall basis of my prints were mountains in Mammoth.
Symbolism
I chose mountains as my imagery, and I chose this because of my multiple trips to Mammoth. I really enjoy going up there and biking, hiking, and taking photos. I chose all black and white for my first few prints, and then I switched to teal and pink to give it a slightly abstract look. I made the mountains teal, and the moon pink to add some pops of color.
Design
I designed my piece this way because it was loosely based after a photo I took in Mammoth. I chose these colors because it seemed to fit the vibe of the piece the best. I really liked the way these colors looked on the piece and It was my favorite out of all the prints I made. I used the Chine Colle (colored paper) technique for the colored prints by cutting out the colored paper, glueing it on the final draft print paper, and printing on top of the cuts I made. I also tried A La Poupee (hand coloring) technique to give it a unique look. I think they both turned out really well.
Spanish Personification
Yo soy el agua que fluye por la montaña
Yo soy el viento que fluye a través de los árboles
Yo soy el agua estancada que descansa en los lagos
Yo soy la tierra y el suelo en el que los animales prosperan
